Attorney Joel Nagel is the founder and managing partner of the Nagel & Associates, LLC law firm. Nagel & Associates is Pittsburgh’s first boutique law firm focusing exclusively on international commercial transactions and asset protection.
The scope of the firm's business has grown 30-fold since it was opened in 1992. In addition to his work as a lawyer, attorney Nagel is known for having a broad vision who provides international business leverage for leading corporations, entrepreneurs, and individuals. In 2005, the Pittsburgh Business Times called him a “fast tracker” for his accomplishments as a lawyer, investor, and humanitarian.
Earlier in his career, attorney Nagel worked at Buchanan Ingersoll, one of the nation’s largest law firms. Previously, he served in the Office of the Chief Counsel for International Commerce of the U.S. Department of Commerce. He also completed a clerkship at the Directorate-General’s Office for Competition, part of the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels. Attorney Nagel is a former Fulbright Scholar and studied law in Europe. He speaks fluent German.

Among attorney Nagel’s successes is structuring the 2,500-acre, Gran Pacifica hotel resort complex in Nicaragua for an investor group. He also has structured a three-acre boutique resort in Ambergris Caye, Belize. In addition, he helped create the first African and Central American distribution facility for a major US bus company. He has worked closely with banks, insurance companies, hedge funds, and mutual funds around the world.
Sought for his entrepreneurial instincts, attorney Nagel serves on the boards of 15 companies and is involved in strategic planning initiatives directed toward growth and “best practices” management.

With an investor’s perspective, attorney Nagel also has helped fund technology ventures. He serves on the advisory board of the Western Pennsylvania Adventure Capital Fund, which invests in early stage high-tech companies in southwestern Pennsylvania. He also is the president of the board of the Nicaraguan Development Corporation and is an advisory board member of the Oxford Club as well as the Ireland-based Sovereign Society and the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation in Nicaragua.

Attorney Nagel has been quoted in U.S. News & World Report on the benefits of retiring abroad and has been featured in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and Pittsburgh Business Times. He has authored articles for International Living Magazine, The Oxford Club, and Island Properties and Hemispheres. He has lectured at conferences and seminars of the Central American International Investment Symposium, International Living and Asset Strategies, The Oxford Club, The Sovereign Society, The Hermitage Forum, and The Money Expo.
Attorney Nagel's Philanthropy
From 2005 to 2006, attorney Nagel served as governor of Rotary District 7300, consisting of 1,500 members in 51 clubs. From 2001 to 2002, when he was president of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh, he launched the first annual “Ducky Derby” to raise funds for charity. He also helped solicit donations and land for two Roberto Clemente Health Clinics in rural Nicaragua to help thousands of underprivileged citizens.
